The PTA supports the library by helping to recruit and organize volunteers for activities and events sponsored by the CPES Library. PTA membership is not required to volunteer.

Library Volunteers

Do you love books?  Do you enjoy quiet time in the library?  Do you have some creativity you've been looking to share at CPES?  Do you have a bit of time here or there to volunteer, but not on a consistent basis?  Do you have time to volunteer every week?  Would you like to volunteer from home? If you answer, "Yes," to ANY of those questions, the library can use your help!  Please review the library volunteering possibilities and contact Mrs. Brinkhuis to sign up.

There are a number of events and committees where the Library needs committee co-chairs and parent volunteers. Click on each to jump to the details:     General Library Volunteer;    Book Fair Volunteer;     Book Fair Cashier;    Book Bonanza;     Battle of the Books;     Makerspace;       Family Maker NIght.

General Library Volunteer (and committee chairperson elect)

Volunteers support the library throughout the school year mostly by shelving returns and sometimes helping with things like updating shelf labels and re-doing displays.  Scheduled, 1-3 hour shifts can be done weekdays from 8:30-4:30, based on your availability and the library's need. On-the-job training provided. The General Library Volunteer committee chairperson works with Mrs. Brinkhuis to organize, schedule, and be the point of contact for the volunteers. This committee chair's work may be done from home.

Book Fair Volunteers

During the winter and spring book fairs, book fair volunteers help to set up, take down and serve as floor help during the fair. Set-up and take down help is done in 2-5 hour shifts the day before and immediately after the fair. Floor help serve as shopping assistants to the student customers by helping them to find books and manage their budgets. Shifts may be from 1-3 hours during the fair based on your availability. This committee chairperson helps to recruit volunteers, arranges the shifts sign-up, and helps train volunteers, and can be done from home leading up to the fair as well as at the fair itself. It is a fun way to meet lots of CPES students and families.

Book Fair Cashier

Book fair cashiers work 2-3 three hour shifts during the fall and spring book fairs. There is a fair amount of on-the-job training required such that we hope volunteers can return for multiple shifts at both fairs. Volunteers should enjoy working with students, be comfortable around technology, be able to count change, and keep their heads during busy times. The committee chair helps set up the cashier table, provide tech support as needed, and sets-up the cashier schedule. This job requires several hours during the fair week including a couple of evenings.

Book Bonanza

The next Book Bonanza will be held in-school sometime during the week of December 15, 2023. The library sorts and sets out donated books for the children to "shop" for free. Volunteers are needed to move the boxes from storage and to sort the books. This is a 1-4 hour commitment. Stay tuned for the specific date.

Battle of the Books

Want to encourage your 4th, 5th, or 6th grader in their reading? Want to read some excellent middle-grade books yourself? If either of those interest you, please click to find out more about the Battle of the Books!

Makerspace/Makerfaire

Interested in helping your child explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math through makerspace projects. Do you have a background in tinkering, building things, or have a passion or background in engineering, architecture, or science? We have an opportunity for you to join a “makerspace committee.” Committee members can support in-school makerspace projects and our annual Family STEAM Night!

Makerspace (during school)
Makerspace activities allow students' learning creatively through art, building, design, coding, and cardboard, lots of cardboard, and duct tape. Maker projects are planned collaboratively with classroom teachers, the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) and School Based Technology Specialist. We would love to bring additional expertise from our parent community. Time commitment includes planning with staff and if your time allows, supporting the class during the lesson and execution of the activity.

Family STEAM Night

Family STEAM Night is an annual evening event in which we have numerous activities focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM). We need parent volunteers that are interested in in planning, organizing and leading our Maker Night activities in collaboration with CPES staff. In the past we have had stations with Ozobots, coding, paper circuits, origami, soap powered boats, and a LEGO car race! Join us in making this year the best experience ever!
